Adele’s ’21′ Is The No. 1 Album For 23rd Week

Adele’s “21″ clocks a 23rd week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, selling 247,000 copies this week (down 17%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It’s the longest-running No. 1 since Prince & the Revolution’s “Purple Rain” soundtrack scored 24 weeks at No. 1 in 1984 and 1985.

The year-to-date sales for “21″ now stand at 2.1 million (by far 2012′s top album). Well behind in second place among the best sellers this year is Whitney Houston’s “Whitney: The Greatest Hits,” with 527,000 sold.

The last time an album sold more than 2 million copies this early in a year was in 2003, when 50 Cent’s just-released “Get Rich or Die Tryin’” blew through 2.6 million by March 2.

Considering that “21″ was released more than a year ago, its 2012 sales are all the more impressive. Reaching back further in the archives, the last time an album that was only a few months old rang up 2 million this fast was in 2001, when Shaggy’s “Hotshot” moved 2.1 million (through March 4). “Hotshot” debuted in August 2000, and in early 2001, Shaggy was riding high on the Billboard Hot 100 with two No. 1s: “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel.”

“Rolling in the Deep” breaks women’s digital sales record

Adele has broken yet another record.

The Grammy-winning artist’s hit song “Rolling in the Deep” has become the biggest-selling digital song of all time by a woman in the United States, reports Billboard.

The song’s cumulative sales rose to 6.68 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan, surpassing Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” (6.62 million) to hold the top selling women’s song in the U.S.

The 99,000 download bump at the end of the week of Feb. 26 caused “Rolling in the Deep” to become the second biggest-selling song among all digital songs, behind the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” (7.82 million).

Last month, the British songstress’ album “21″ surpassed the Whitney Houston-led soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” as the longest running No. 1 album by a woman in history. Adele’s “21″ nabbed the Album of the Year title at this year’s Grammys.

Adele cancels US tour following doctors’ warnings over voice

The 23-year-old recently made a sensational comeback performing at the Grammy and the Brit Awards following surgery in November to remove a polyp on her vocal cords.

However, she has now shelved plans to play dates in the US after being told she risks permanently damaging her voice if she performs too much too soon.

‘The surgery was successful but doctors are still concerned she could damage her golden voice,’ a source told the Star on Sunday.

‘They have given the go-ahead for one-off shows but a full tour has been ruled out for now.’

This could also mean that plans for the Someone Like You singer to play shows at London’s O2 Arena could also be scrapped – potentially losing her a fortune in earnings.

But a friend says this is the least of her worries, telling the paper: ‘Adele isn’t motivated by money, that’s the last thing she cares about,’ a friend told the paper.

‘She’s had a serious scare with her voice and wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again.’

Adele recently won six Grammy Awards as well as picking up the Brit Awards for best British female and album of the year for 21.

The album, which returned to number one in the album charts last weekend, has now overtaken Michael Jackson’s Bad to become the eighth-biggest selling long-player of all time in the UK.

’21′ overtakes ‘Bad’ in the all-time biggest selling albums chart

Sales of Adele’s ’21′ have now overtaken Michael Jackson’s seminal album ‘Bad’ in the UK.

The singer, who took home two Brit Awards last week, including Best Album for ’21′, is now the owner of the eighth biggest selling album of all time in the UK, with sales of 4.02 million, reports the Official Charts Company.

Adele is also fast closing in on Dire Straits’ ‘Brothers In Arms’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘The Dark Side Of The Moon’, which are the sixth and seventh biggest sellers of all-time in the UK. To leapfrog both albums, ’21′ only needs to shift another 150,000 copies.

The top five selling albums of all time in the UK have been unchanged for sometime. Queen’s ‘Greatest Hits’ is Number One with sales of 5.83 million, with The Beatles’ classic LP ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band’ in second place on 5.04 million.

Abba’s ‘Gold’ is third, Oasis’ ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory)’ is fourth and Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is fifth.

Adele recently stated that she will be heading into the studio to begin work on the follow-up to ’21′ in the coming weeks.

Rumor: Adele Cancels ITV1′s Music Special

Adele is reportedly seeking revenge on ITV after she was interrupted when delivering her speech at the BRIT Awards recently. Rumor has it, the “Rolling in the Deep” hitmaker has bailed out of her scheduled appearance on ITV1′s music special.

The British beauty, who won two kudos at the BRITs, is also rumored to have rejected an offer to appear on ITV’s talent competition “The X Factor”. According to the Daily Star, she plans to perform on rival show, BBC’s “The Voice”, instead.

“Adele was embarrassed by the way she was treated in front of millions of viewers by ITV,” a source says. “By turning down a music special with the network and also appearing on its main rival’s music show she is giving them the ultimate one-fingered salute.”

There is no official word from ITV regarding the rumor, but bosses at the TV network allegedly are upset by the snubbing. “Adele is the biggest British name in music in the world at the moment and her refusal to work with ITV will hit them hard,” the source testifies.

Adele was forced to cut short her speech when accepting a BRIT Award for Best British Album. “Can I just say, then, goodbye and I’ll see you next time round?” she said to the crowd before flipping the bird to let everyone know that she’s disappointed.

The network, through a representative, was quick to issue an apology for the inconvenience. “We don’t want this to undermine her incredible achievement in winning our night’s biggest award,” the rep stated. “The Brits is a live event. Unfortunately the program was over running and we had to move on.”

Adele set to star at Olympics closing show

Adele looks likely to perform at the closing ceremony for the London Olympics.

Organisers yesterday dropped a massive hint that the 23-year-old could help headline ‘the biggest after-show party’.

Revealing details about the event, they said it would be ‘an elegant mash-up of British music’ over the past 50 years.

Entitled A Symphony of British Music, the performance will be exclusively ‘British music by British artists’.

Music director David Arnold said: ‘Without saying we have booked anyone, it goes from Elgar to Adele.

‘It is not just a pop concert, it is not just a classical rendition. It will be everything that we think is fabulous about British music.’

Adele breaks Whitney Houston’s chart record

The late Whitney Houston was unable to oust Adele from the top spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, and the British singer’s “21″ replaced “The Bodyguard” as the longest running No. 1 album by a woman.

Boosted by her six Grammy awards and performance comeback, Adele’s “21″ saw its biggest sales week yet in 52 weeks on the U.S. chart, selling 730,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan.

That gave Adele her 21st week at the top spot, beating the record held by Houston with her 1992 “Bodyguard” album. “21″ which features hits like “Rolling in the Deep” and “Someone Like You” has now sold more than 18 million copies worldwide since its release in February 2011, Adele’s Columbia Record label said.

The 23 year-old singer and songwriter also saw a surge in sales for her debut album, “19,” which sold 87,000 copies.(…)
